The Process of SSL Encryption

The SSL Certificate has  two primary functions:

  • SSL Encryption allows information to be transmitted over system networks in a safe manner.
  • Identity Assurance (validation) allows a business running a website to prove that they are legitimate.

Once a secure transaction is initiated, there are four steps taken to establish a secure connection:

1. The web browser checks the SSL Certificate to ensure that it is valid and that the website you are connecting to is legitimate and safe.

2. Data encryption levels are established based on the understanding between the web browser and website.

3. The web browser and web server send each other unique codes to use when encoding the data that will be sent.

4. The browser and server communicate using the encryption, the browser displays the encrypting icon, and the Web pages and data are processed securely.
